Samye/ Ganden Trek

This tour starts in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, where we will explore its great palaces, monasteries and temples. In this program we have 4 days trek over the Tibetan mountains to Samye, the first and holiest monastery of Tibet. The trek through highland yak pastures and over Shugu La pass (5200m/17000ft) takes us to a sacred mountain where many great Buddhist saints and teachers meditated, including Lord Padma-Sambhava (Guru rinponche), the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. The breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks as well as the views of Tibetan countryside will make the journey an unforgettable one.

The Ganden - Samye trail was the most popular trekking route, when Tibet first opened for travellers in 1985, this trek consist crossing of the 2 mountain passes, beautiful alpine lakes and nomads. The trek begins from The Ganden Monastery (4180 m), 32 kms by road from Lhasa high above the Kyichu River and ends at The Samye Monastery. The main temple Utse at Samye represents Mount Meru, centre of the Universe.

This demanding trek has emerged as most popular in the U region. Despite its popularity, the Ganden to Samye trek is a tough walk crossing two high passes through a remote region. We take good time acclimatizing in Lhasa and Ganden before we start out on this trek, because the nature of the terrain on the trek to Samye can create serious difficulties for anyone suffering from AMS while crossing Shug La (5250m) or Chitu La (5100m) en-route to Samye. The valley between these passes is quite high in elevation (4890m) and very remote. The only way to decent to lower ground or seek medical help is to retrace back over the previous pass to the nearest road head.
